LIBRARY & INFORMATION CENTRE DIRECTORATE

The Library Directorate was instutionalised in October 1998, and in October 2005 was established as an independent unit, titled “Library and Information Centre of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens”. The Directorate began its’ functions on January 2008, with Mrs. Aikaterini Asimakopoulou as the first Director (until August 2009). The Directorate stopped its’ functions until December 2014, when the functions resumed, with Mr. Valsamis Valsamakis as Director.

The Library & Information Centre’s mission is to support and enhance the educational and research activities of the University, to manage and distribute specialized scientific information to the Academic Community and to participate in every educational and cultural activity.
The Directorate is responsible for implementing the mission of the University’s Library and Information Centre and managing, supervising and coordinating its’ nine departments.
Strategic planning, financial management, staff management (staff assessment, distribution of staff in the departments and proper assignment of duties, ensuring high quality services), developing policies (for loan and interlibrary loan services, deposition of gray literature, collection development and enrichment with textbooks through the “Eudoxus” platform , etc.), establishing standards for all its’ functions, proper application of the Rules of Operation of LIC, collection of statistic data, ensuring high quality services through academic libraries evaluation indicators and in general the active involvement Library in achieving the objectives of the National University of Athens.

The Directorate consists of eight Departments/Libraries, each belonging to the corresponding School of the University, and the Library Computer Centre. Analytically:

Library of the School of Education, which fulfills the needs of the faculty members and students of the School’s departments.

Library of the School of Sciences, which fulfills the needs of the faculty members and students of the School’s departments, as well as those of the Pharmacy department

Library of the School of Health Sciences, which fulfills the needs of the faculty members and students of the School’s departments.

Library of the School of Physical Education and Sport Science, which fulfills the needs of the faculty members and students of the School’s department.

Library of the School of Theology, which fulfills the needs of the faculty members and students of the School’s departments.

Library of the Law School, which fulfills the needs of the faculty members and students of the Law School.

Library of the School of Economic and Political Science, which fulfills the needs of the faculty members and students of the School’s departments.

Library of the School of Philosophy, which fulfills the needs of the faculty members and students of the School’s departments.

Library of the School of Agricultural Development, Nutrition & Sustainability,which fulfills the needs of the faculty members and students of the School’s departments.

The Library and Information Center’s collection consists of a total of 1.083.500 items (books, periodicals, maps, cd-roms, etc.), that are divided as follows between the branches:

Interlibrary Loan Services

The National and Kapodistrian University is a member of the Hellenic Interlibrary Loan Network. The network was developed through the Hellenic Academic Libraries Link and is the official cooperation between organizations which are responsible for the operation of libraries & information services and Interlibrary loan service in Greece and Cyprus, through the “IRIS” platform.
Additionally, the Library of National and Kapodistrian University, in cooperation with the National Documentation Centre, handles and satisfies requests of the members of the academic community for scientific journal articles, conference proceedings, etc.
The National Documentation Centre fulfilled requests through the National Network of Scientific and Technological Libraries. Furthermore, in cooperation with Libraries, such as the British Library Document Supply Center (BLDSC) and SUBITO, the National Documentation Centre, handles international requests.

Institutional Repository / Digital Library “PERGAMOS”

The Library and Information Centre handles “PERGAMOS”, the unified Institutional Repository / Digital Library of the University of Athens. PhD, graduate and postgraduate theses are deposited there. (https://pergamos.lib.uoa.gr/)

Hellenic Academic Libraries Link

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens is a member of Hellenic Academic Libraries Link, which enables the Library and Information Centre to provide the members of the academic community with a number of extremely useful services. (http://www.seab.gr/)

Donations

NKUA Libraries encourage and will gladly accept donations of any kind of printed material as well as equipment and furniture for the enrichment and te development of the multiple collections and the overall provided services.
